‘Can you hear me?’ he shouted again.

The man’s head lifted, and he half opened his eyes. He was confused but must have realised he was safe. He tried to raise a hand.

‘What’s your name?’ Julian asked, undoing the guy’s jacket to check for injuries. ‘What are you called, chum?’

‘We’ve got to get rid of him.’

‘Lee, please!’

‘He’s after me.’

‘Yeah, well, he’s not going to come at you now. You’re okay.’

‘You mean it?’

‘Yes.’ Lee needed reassurance, the man needed hospital care, and Julian needed a drink. All in good time. ‘What’s your name?’ he asked again but the man’s eyes closed, and he passed out.

‘Oh fuck,’ Lee said, pointing.

Julian looked at him and then followed his finger. The guy’s ankle was the size of a football.

‘And another one for the casualty suite,’ Julian muttered.

The ankle looked to be the only injury apart from the cuts. Julian’s primary concern was how cold the guy was. If he was the man from the other car (and having seen Lee’s reaction Julian had no doubt that he was), then he’d been outside for over twenty-four hours, and, looking at the state of his clothes, he’d been in the rain for most of the time.

‘We have to get him warm,’ he said, thinking fast. ‘Out of these clothes, into something dry and in front of the fire.’

‘Should I run a bath?’ Lee asked, standing and stepping away.

‘No. If he’s that cold, it’ll feel like we’re burning him. Feeling strong?’

‘Why?’

‘We can’t leave him here. We need to get him upstairs.’

‘Don’t suppose you’ve got a lift,’ Lee murmured as he glanced towards the rambling staircase.

‘I managed you last night,’ Julian said. ‘But this guy’s massive.’

‘Drag the bastard by the hair for all I care.’

‘You don’t mean that.’

‘No, I don’t,’ Lee admitted. ‘Sorry, everything’s a bit of a mess right now.’
